• Don’t leave the scene of the accident. If you’re involved in an accident and leave, it would be considered a hit and run, leaving you subject to criminal charges. Instead, pull over as soon as it’s safe, exchange insurance information with the other drivers and wait for emergency services.  
• Don’t apologize or admit fault. This could be used against you in the future. Instead, stay calm, check to make sure everyone’s okay and wait to speak to the police and a lawyer. 
• Don’t make a statement until official ones are made. Don’t allow yourself to be pressured by the other drivers or any insurance company to make a statement about the accident. You could say something that’ll have a negative impact on your insurance claim or undermine your court case, should it come to that. If you have any doubts, speak to a lawyer before anyone else. 
• Don’t fail to report the accident. Call 911 right away if the damage to the vehicles involved looks to be more than $2,000, if somebody’s injured or if you think that one of the other drivers is intoxicated or otherwise guilty of a Criminal Code offense. If there are no injuries and minimal damage to the vehicles, report the accident to the police within 24 hours.  
• Don’t wait before seeking medical attention. You could be injured even if you don’t feel any pain right away. Many serious injuries won’t manifest themselves immediately. In addition, waiting to seek medical attention can be used against you by your insurance company or in a potential court case.
